Styles & Designs

I like to work to styles and shapes that I find pleasing to the eye. The Thistle shape, Barrel and straight sided (Long Tall Sally) are some of my favourites, but the wood can have the final say in the shape. What begins in my mind as one particular style may end up changing when I see the spalting or grain colour appearing after the initial roughing out of the wood. As with any new venture, wood turning has proven to be no different from watercolour painting and patchwork in that I want to try out various ideas, shapes, styles and techniques. Some, happily work while others are a disaster, but the trial period has been an experience and learning has taken place, so that has to be good.

The Thistle, Barrel, Long Tall Sally, Tapered and a few other design styles are pictured here. You will notice some have arrangements in them. These are designed and arranged by me specifically for those vases but do not necessarily have to be with them. The vases usually come with a plastic phial or glass vase for dried flowers, grasses or fresh blooms to be inserted.

The artificial flowers that I work with include Scottish style Thistles, Icelandic Poppies (9 colours), Roses, Sweet peas, Star flowers and other seasonal blooms. These are arranged with grasses, preserved Beech, Oak, Rhododendron or Ivy. Phormium leaves are woven and dried naturally to provide special interest and depth to some of the arrangements.
